BURNHAM & HIGHBRIDGE MENS SHED
The essence of a Shed is not a building, but the network of relationships between the members.
Who We Are
Men coming together, working shoulder to shoulder making, fixing and talking.
Here at Burnham Mens Shed our activities involve making, or mending wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turrning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture, renovation) but may include bike repairs, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, IT help, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car. Reclamation, upcycling, reuse and restoration will feature.
What is a Mens Shed?
A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy.
A Men’s Shed offers sanctuary to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue.
Learning and belonging
They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.
What the 'Shedders' say
"It gives me a reason to get up in the morning and for two days a week I feel I’m gainfully employed.I really feel good working with and helping chaps who often feel isolated in the community.I would need a very good reason not to come."
"Fixing, making and re-using materials has given me the motivation to improve my rented home. It improved my mental state and it gave me hope."
"To be able to come to the shed and work and help others gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I feel a sense of worth and love the way all the men work together."
"It’s great to learn new skills, get advice and sit and have a chat."

TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS
Somerset Community Foundation Grant
Thanks to Somerset Community Foundation who have generously given a grant to install decking around our new 'portacabin' which is wheelchair friendly and enables access to the quiet area next to the main 'Shed'
The Big Lottery Fund Grant
Having worked hard to make our dream of 'portacabin' come true we finally achieved our aim. The Big Lottery Fund generously gave us a grant to totally fund the purchase and installation of this much needed space. We now have a proper area for members to have a coffee and chat as well as an area for the train and model makers away from the noise of the main shed
Women's SHEd now open
Due to the success of the upholstery course there is now a women's SHEd which will be held on the third Monday of every month. Many different projects will be tackled from building a bird house to brick laying. The first session was a great success with all participants giving there thoughts for future sessions
Somerset Community Foundation Grant
Due to the generosity of Somerset Community Foundation we have been able to create a sound proof room for all of the noisier machinery plus purchase a panel saw giving members a great tool for working with large sheets of timber. Moving the noisy machines also makes the main 'Shed' a far more user friendly environment so members can work shoulder to shoulder and talk to each other.
Somerset Community Partnership Grant
Somerset Community Partnership generously gave us a grant that enabled us to move all of the equipment around creating a sound proof area so the main 'Shed' is a far better place to come and enjoy working alongside others plus the grant enabled us to purchase a panel saw which is aklso installed in the sound proof room
